4 Baby Room Essentials (You May Not Have Thought Of)

When expecting a little bundle of joy, one of the things that most mums look forward to is creating their baby’s room. It’s an exciting time to get creative and create a space for just you and baby to bond and get to know each other.

You’ve probably got all the essentials thought out already, such as the furniture, the moses baskets and the countless toys that already seem to be accumulating before the little one has arrived, but have you really got all the essentials?

Drawing on our years of experience both as a baby shop and being parents ourselves, here are just some items which we think every nursery should have!

A Fan

Summer is heading our way and although there are still those odd chilly days, having a fan to hand will be essential during those warm, hot and sticky months. When a heat wave hits, shops tend to sell out of these necessities quite quickly, so even if you aren’t due in the summer, it’s always a good idea to pick one up for future use.

Not only will the fan keep your baby nice and cool while they try and sleep, it will also provide a quiet, soothing noise for them to listen to that will keep them relaxed and actually help them drop off to sleep!

A Night Light

Although your baby won’t be able to understand what light and dark is when they are first born, you may wonder why we are considering a nightlight as an essential.

Firstly, the nightlight isn’t just there for the baby’s benefit, it can really help you during those night feeds. Rather than turning the bright room light on when you come in to feed your little one, the night light will usually provide enough glow to light up the room so that you can see where you are going while keeping your baby in a calmer state of mind,

Secondly, babies love looking at colourful things, even if they don’t fully understand what they are. It will keep them mesmerised – and therefore a little quieter – during those periods through the night where they may wake up and not actually need feeding.

Easy Access Storage

Although it’s good to have a proper set of drawers and a wardrobe in your baby’s room to store their countless items of clothing, you will want an area which has all the essentials in an easy to access place.

If you’ve had children before, you’ll already know how difficult it can be sometimes to rummage through wardrobes with your wriggling little one in your arms, so instead of always relying on the wardrobe for storage, why not keep a selection of baby grows, nappy changing items and essential medicine in an easily accessible place?

You could use a basket storage option where each item has its own basket which can be pulled out quickly and the item removed so that you don’t have to fight with those drawers that simply won’t budge back into the dresser ever again!

Make sure that you’re designing your baby’s room with you in mind too; they won’t be able to fully appreciate it for a few years, and you will need to be able to feel comfortable looking after your child in that space, no matter how old they are!
