Helping Your Baby Sleep

One of the first things that you will hear once you announce that you’re expecting is that you’re about to experience a long period of time without sleep. While it is true that babies – especially newborns –  take up a lot of your time, it doesn’t mean that you’ll be wandering around like a zombie while your little one gurgles happily in your arms.

Newborns are known for only sleeping for a couple of hours at the time, but do you blame them? They’ve got a whole new world to take in – would you want to spend every hour through the day sleeping? However, the main reason for this is that babies aren’t born with the concept of day and night, so they don’t realise that sleep should be saved for the later hours. Their stomachs are also very small, meaning they need food more often than we do.

In order to help your baby to settle into a good night time routine, you can do the following:

  • Keep your voiced hushed and low when trying to put your baby to sleep.
  • Try to place your baby in their cot once they’ve been fed, winded and changed.
  • Keep lighting to a minimum.

Stopping Your Baby Crying

There’s nothing worse than seeing a baby cry – it’s one of the most heartbreaking noises to hear, especially when we sometimes can’t tell why our little ones are so upset.

Finding out the cause is the first thing you should do; babies cry for a wide variety of reasons, including a dirty or wet nappy, wind, tiredness, feeling hungry, overheating or being too cold or even just simply some attention in the form of a cuddle.

Settling your baby will depend on the cause, but there are a few ways which parents have used for years which have worked. Swaying gently while your baby is in your arms can help greatly, as most babies feel safer and more relaxed around their parents. Dummies are also a great way to keep your baby occupied, but many parents fear that they will become too dependent on them – when used in moderation, dummies are a great pacifier.

Distraction is also a technique that works; directing your babies attention to music, a toy or even slow, flashing lights like the TV can help them become distracted from their crying, and often they will focus on this instead.

Here at Simply Baby, we’re here for parents as well as babies and young children, and we want you all to have the best possible parenting experience. With the help of our wide range of products, you’ll have all the tools you need for a happy, healthy baby with very little hassle!
