10 Useful Tips for Pregnancy Care During the Summer: Part 2

The heat just doesn’t want to let up this summer! With heat wave after heat wave bombarding the UK this year, it’s more important than ever to make sure you stay safe and comfortable during your pregnancy. We’ve already had a look at 5 tips for pregnancy care during the summer, so with 2018 proving to be an absolute roaster, here are five more:

  1. Wear Cool Clothing

Our first tip is to break out that cool clothing. No, not cool as in hip and fashionable – although there’s no reason why you can’t do that as well – but anything that is light and loose should be coming out of your wardrobe during these summer months. Cotton maxi-dresses are the perfect garment for cool comfort in the summer. Avoid tight, constricting clothing and stick to things that you can move and breathe comfortably in.

  1. Go for a Swim

Just because you’re pregnant doesn’t mean you have to miss out on any poolside fun. Instead of dusting off last year’s bikini, get yourself a comfortable maternity suit. Swimming is a great way to cool off and a wonderful form of low-impact exercise that will benefit your health without putting any unnecessary strain on your body.

  1. Take Naps in the Afternoon

The middle of the day tends to be the hottest time, so why not skip it? Try to take advantage of the cooler early mornings and evenings to do your errands and save this spot in the middle for a well-deserved snooze. You’ll be able to bypass the heat as well as recharge. Perhaps invest in a body pillow or a light comforter to make those midday naps even more tempting.

  1. Elevate Your Feet

Swollen feet during pregnancy are just one of those unavoidable things. But the heat of summer only makes it worse. So, stay off your feet as often as possible and elevate them on a comfortable surface to help with blood circulation. For added cooling effect, try a cool, damp towel around your ankles.

  1. Wear Appropriate Footwear

Whilst we’re on the topic of feet, you should minimise the risk of the swelling getting worse by avoiding shoes that don’t give proper support. It can be tempting in the summer to wear flip flops, but they have awful arch support and will only exasperate feet swelling. Invest in a good pair of sandals that provide arch support, so you can wear summer weather-appropriate shoes in comfort and style.
